This article is about black Oil used for energy. For other types of oil, see Seed Oil and Creosote Oil.

Oil is a liquid introduced by BuildCraft that produces 3 MJ/t when consumed in a Combustion Engine. Oil can be further refined into Fuel in a Refinery, which produces 6 MJ/t when consumed.

Oil Wells

A large oil well with a tall geyser

Oil can be pumped out of natural oil wells dotted around the landscape. Although the oil wells can be found in any biome, they are found in greater concentrations in the desert. Oil wells can also be found in the ocean, but do not mix with water. The oil well itself is composed of the above-ground oil spout, a one-block wide oil shaft in the ground, and a deep underground source pool of oil.

An oil well in water

The height of the oil spout can give some indication to the size of the underground oil pool. Medium-sized deposits contain between 100 to 1,000 buckets of oil while larger deposits contain between 2,000 and 17,000 buckets of oil.

Extraction

Oil is extracted via a pump and transported with waterproof pipes. It can be pumped directly into an engine to produce energy, or into a tank for storage.

While this is not a time-efficient method, oil can also be manually transported using buckets, as with any liquid.
